Sophia Shao

Background

Sophia is a tax partner currently based in Shanghai with over 15-year experience in providing US corporate and partnership tax advisory services to multinational companies in TMT, healthcare and pharmaceutical, real estate, manufacture, and power and utility sectors.  Sophia also focused on providing tax advisory services to the clients in financial services industry, such as investment management companies, private equity funds, fund of funds, investment banks, the portfolio companies, operating partnerships, and the high net worth individuals.

In 2007, Sophia joined PwC US, Boston office, working in the international core tax and financial service groups for 8 years.  In 2015, Sophia joined PwC Shanghai, the US tax consulting group.  In addition to her PwC experiences, Sophia also industry working experiences at Goldman Sachs US and InterGen, China Huaneng Group’s US affiliate.

Relevant experience

Sophia’s recent experience includes assisting China MNCs doing or expanding business in the US from cross-border tax planning and compliance perspective.  Specifically, her expertise includes providing consulting services to China public or private companies in setting up tax-efficient structure for their investments in the US and advising on US income and withholding tax implications; performing tax due diligence with respect to the US targets acquisitions; assisting US shareholders and investors in formulating tax-efficient holding structures and exit strategies for their offshore investments; advising multinational clients regarding their corporate reorganization, formulate cash repatriation and other tax planning strategies to optimize the US investments structure; US GAAP and IFRS tax accounting; US corporate and partnership tax planning and compliance; and FATCA and CRS readiness services.

Qualifications

Sophia earned her Master of Accounting and Bachelor in Business Administration degrees from University of Utah in the United States, and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, respectively.  Sophia is a Certified Public Accountant in the US.
